About the Mentawai Islands

The Mentawai Islands lie off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, roughly 100 to 150 km from Padang. The main islands are Siberut, Sipora, North Pagai and South Pagai. The chain is best known for reef waves that are exposed to Indian Ocean swell, and for the culture of Siberut, where some families still live in traditional uma longhouses.

A fast, hollow right-hander off Katiet on south Sipora, breaking over shallow reef. An advanced to expert wave; best on south to southwest swell around mid to high tide.

The left across the bay from HTs. Generally more forgiving than the right, with walls and occasional tube sections, so it is a common option for improving surfers.

A long, rippable left off Silabu on North Pagai, known for consistency and high-performance walls. Popular with intermediate to advanced surfers.

Improving intermediates can find softer options, especially outside peak swell months. Beginners should choose a camp that offers coaching and read our beginner guide before booking.

The main swell season usually runs from about April to October, with the most consistent and larger swells often arriving mid-year. The shoulder months can be quieter. Conditions vary every year, so treat any season as a probability rather than a guarantee.

Most trips start in Padang, West Sumatra (Minangkabau International Airport). From there, fast ferries run to the islands, charter boats leave directly from Padang, and small planes fly to Rokot on Sipora. Allow a buffer day in Padang, as sea crossings depend on weather.

Land camps give you a stable base and usually suit mixed groups and non-surfers. Charters let experienced surfers follow the swell between island groups. The guides on this site compare both; the right choice depends on your level, group and budget.

Prices vary widely by operator, season, accommodation standard and trip length, and they change from year to year. We do not publish fixed prices. Ask operators for a written quote that lists what is included, such as transfers, meals, boat trips and taxes.

Reef booties are worth packing for shallow reef breaks, and a basic first aid kit for reef cuts is sensible. The islands are remote and evacuation can take time, so travel insurance that covers surfing and medical evacuation is strongly recommended.
