Mentawai Surf Trips World-Class Waves Paradise Epic Barrels & Legendary Breaks

We cater to intermediate to advanced surfers. You should be comfortable surfing overhead waves and reef breaks. Beginners can join our 5D4N Culture + Surf package which includes mellower breaks. Most spots require solid paddling fitness and barrel riding experience for the premium breaks like HTs and Lance's.

Peak season is April-October when consistent SW groundswells arrive with offshore winds. June-August offers the biggest swells (6-10ft+). March-April and September-October have fewer crowds and still get excellent waves (4-8ft). The Mentawais receive swell year-round, but November-March can be inconsistent with onshore winds.

All packages include accommodation (boat or bungalow), 3 meals daily, boat transfers to surf spots, experienced surf guides, drinking water, and basic first aid. Boat charters also include AC cabins and snorkeling gear. NOT included: surfboards, international flights, Padang-Mentawai ferries, alcohol, travel insurance, and reef booties (highly recommended to bring).

Fly into Minangkabau International Airport in Padang, Sumatra. From Padang, take a 12-hour overnight ferry or 45-minute charter flight to the Mentawais. Most boat charters meet you in Padang and include the ferry. We provide detailed transfer instructions after booking. Plan to arrive in Padang 1 day before your surf trip starts.

We keep groups small: maximum 8-10 surfers per boat charter and 8-12 at surf camps. This ensures uncrowded lineups and personalized attention from guides. Private charters for groups of 6-8 are also available. Smaller groups = more waves for you!

YES, reef booties are essential! Sharp coral reefs and shallow sections require protection. Bring 2-3 boards: a step-up (6'6"-7'0" for bigger days), your everyday shortboard (5'10"-6'2"), and optionally a small wave groveler. Most breaks are hollow and powerful, so bring boards with more volume than you'd ride at home. Board racks and wax are provided.

The Mentawais are one of the most consistent surf destinations on Earth - flat spells are extremely rare during season. Our guides monitor swell forecasts and position the boat at the best breaks. In the unlikely event of dangerous weather, we prioritize safety and may adjust the itinerary. No refunds for natural swell variations, but we guarantee you'll score quality waves.

Crowd levels vary by spot and season. Prime breaks like HTs and Lance's Left can have 20-30 surfers during peak season (July-August). However, there are 12+ quality breaks in the area - our guides excel at finding uncrowded alternatives when famous spots are busy. Early mornings and late afternoons offer the least crowds. Shoulder season (April-May, Sept-Oct) is less crowded overall.

The Mentawais have low malaria risk but consult your doctor about prophylaxis. Bring mosquito repellent, antibiotics for infections, and reef-cut antiseptic. Water is provided but bring electrolyte supplements. Travel insurance covering surf-related injuries is mandatory. Nearest hospital is in Padang (12 hours), so minor medical supplies and first aid training are important. Our crew carries comprehensive first aid kits.
